A Tribute to my Hometown - Tinahely County Wicklow

A small photo essay in appreciation of my hometown of Tinahely, Co. Wicklow.

I was born and reared in a little village in the valley of the Derry River in Co. Wicklow surrounded by fields, hills, cows and not much else.  My heart longed for one day to leave my small hometown for the big city and never look back.  But there's something about the beauty of this South Wicklow town that cannot be escaped, and so now sitting in my apartment in Dublin, I find my heart longing for the place I couldn't wait to leave.

The village and it's surrounds are steeped in history and folklore, as are many Irish towns, so for a college project I decided to photograph the village and write an article about it's history, but I think more people than my lecturer should have the opportunity to see the place I call home, so without further adieu, here it is.

The view of the village from Mangan's Lane Trailhead, which joins up to part of The Wicklow Way.

As a child I spent a lot of time walking through these fields and similar ones and up and down Mangan's lane on nature walks, the beautiful view was calming to me even then.

The Courthouse Arts Centre, it was the old Courthouse in the village, then went unused for a number of years and fell into disrepair.  20 years ago this year a number of FÁS workers helped to refurbish the building to what it is today.  It is now home to coffee mornings, Art Exhibitions, comedy and music gigs and more.  I spent a lot of my childhood here attending Drama lessons, and to me it's a place full of fond memories.

The Market House on Dwyer Sqaure Tinahely, my Dad says he remembers when he was a kid there were markets held here where local farmers sold their produce.  The building is now used as the local library.

The Old Mill.

The Derry River, from the bridge at the bottom of the town.

This is actually the view from my old bedroom window, it's the one thing I miss about sleeping in the small back bedroom of my house!

Tomnafinnoge Woods, unfortunately as this was for college, I was taking these photos in April and May, to truly see the beauty of Tomnafinnoge, you need to go on a sunny Summers day, trust me you wont regret it!

Debris that had been left around after the bad Winter storms, with some flowers growing around it in stark contrast.

The old railway bridge, at the Tomnafinnoge woods end of The Railway walk, which runs from Tinahely village to Tomnafinnoge.

And that's all I have for now, let me know if you liked this kind of post and I can start doing more.

Until the next time,

MK xo
